Why we love.... Succession

Succession

With real wealth comes stealth. Take Succession (Season 3 playing to rave reviews now), HBO’s dark saga of grasping family in-fighting. With the Roys, everything sneaks up on you. Not just the subterfuge and the snakery, but the show’s fashion, which we love.

Family Roy’s look is all very low key. Understated and outwardly relaxed, but at the same time wholly calculated. Patriarch Logan, sons Kendall and Roman, daughter Shiv, and their extended others’ dress code is expensive but discreet: swathes of cashmere and Vicuna, soft-shouldered, stunningly cut wool tailoring, heavy shawl-collar hand-knits (perfect if you own a chilly Scottish castle), occasional touches of shearling, logo-free polos, logo-free baseball caps, logo-free everything. Logo-free, that is, unless they are trying to ingratiate themselves with the common man, which was the case when they turned up en masse at that tech conference wearing Moncler vests...

The preferred colours (or non-colours) for this stealthiest of self-made media dynasties are beige, greige, grey and brown. Again, as per the lack of logos, it doesn’t do to draw attention to yourself, to appear desperate. Better a subtle affirmation of status, a look that is recognised only by those with a knowing eye. Because at the end of the day those are the only people that matter.
